McLaren Racing has signed British driver Alex Lynn to its Hypercar programme, pairing him with Mikkel Jensen and Laurens Vanthoor for the 2027 24 Hours of Le Mans, according to the race’s official announcement. Lynn, 33, will move to the team once his present commitments with Cadillac Hertz Team Jota conclude.

Team Principal James Barclay said Lynn’s “speed, technical understanding and knowledge of the FIA World Endurance Championship will be a real asset” to the programme.

Track record across multiple categories

Lynn’s endurance racing credentials span several series and distances. He took victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring twice, in 2017 and 2022, and claimed the LMGTE PRO class at Le Mans in 2020. More recently, he won the European Le Mans Series LMP2 championship in 2023.

Before focusing on endurance racing, Lynn demonstrated versatility across single-seaters and Formula E. He won the Macao Grand Prix in 2013 and the GP3 championship in 2014, and served as a Formula One development driver.

The demands of Le Mans

Success at the 24 Hours requires more than raw speed. The race demands drivers withstand pressure and exhaustion over the 24-hour distance, maintaining concentration through extended stints in the cockpit. Lynn understands these particular demands well.

“As a British driver is there any bigger honour than being a McLaren Racing driver?” Lynn said in a statement. “I know from experience that WEC and Le Mans are incredibly tough to win and are more competitive today than ever before.” He added that he sees McLaren’s leadership laying “the foundations of what could be a championship-winning team.”

Building the McLaren Hypercar effort

With Lynn now joining the established line-up of Jensen and Vanthoor, McLaren enters the detailed preparation phase ahead of the 95th running of Le Mans. According to the team, performance on track depends as much on the months of engineering and planning beforehand as on race day itself.
