The Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar will race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday in a historic moment for the FIA World Endurance Championship: the first time the series has included the Spanish track on its calendar. For Aston Martin’s works team, it marks Round 7 of 8 in a season defined by steady results and emerging competitiveness.

The British ultra-luxury performance brand arrives after a strong performance at Fuji three weeks earlier, where both team entries qualified in the top six for the first time this year. The #007 Valkyrie, shared by Harry Tincknell and Tom Gamble, led the race during competition. Meanwhile, the #009 machine of Alex Riberas and Marco Sørensen ran in contention for a podium finish before a late Safety Car intervention shifted the outcome. The team has extended its run of points finishes to eight races, a streak that began early in the season and has not been broken.

A new proving ground

Barcelona presents both opportunity and uncertainty for the Hypercar class. According to Aston Martin’s technical assessment, the circuit shares characteristics with tracks where Valkyrie has performed well, particularly its high-speed opening sector. Marco Sørensen acknowledged the unknowns: “Barcelona is going to present a challenge for the Hypercar class. It’s quite a small and narrow track, and so I think the traffic management is going to be quite difficult there.” No team has raced hypercars at this venue before, meaning all competitors enter on equal footing in terms of preparation and prior data.

For Riberas, the race carries personal significance. Racing in the WEC hypercar class at his home circuit in the city where he grew up represents a milestone he described as beyond expectation: “Racing on my home track, in the city where I grew up, is a dream come true, and especially to do so in a hypercar with the Aston Martin THOR Team and the Valkyrie is something that never in a million years did I think would become a reality.”

Championship mathematics

Aston Martin sits sixth in the FIA Hypercar Manufacturers’ Championship with 54 points, trailing fourth place by 42 points, according to the team’s statement. The Barcelona race and the season finale at Monza on 8 November will distribute a maximum of 88 points combined. The team has posted two fourth-place finishes this season, at Spa-Francorchamps and the Lone Star Le Mans at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

Tincknell reflected on recent form and the opportunity ahead: “Fuji feels like a missed opportunity for us, so I think it’s great to be able to have another chance to score a great result. The car has been progressing well as the season has gone on and we’ve seen that in our results.” Gamble, returning to a track where he has raced before, added that recent pace gives reason for optimism. “We had some mega pace in Fuji so I’m looking forward to building on that again and racing towards a strong result in Spain.”

The Valkyrie’s technical platform

The competition variant of Valkyrie is developed from the road-going hypercar by Aston Martin and The Heart of Racing, blending a race-optimized carbon-fibre chassis with a modified 6.5-litre V12 engine that reaches 11,000 rpm. In standard form, the powerplant produces more than 1,000 brake horsepower, though it is governed to 500 kilowatts (671 brake horsepower) under WEC rules. The hypercar competes in both the FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA, making it the only road-derived machine to contest both series simultaneously. Team principal Ian James underscored the focus ahead: “As a team we always try to focus on execution, eliminating mistakes, and maximising opportunities when they occur. We will continue this process through the last two races of the year and push to see what else we can achieve with Valkyrie before the season ends.”
